Nana, as she was known, was truly one of a kind. She had special and unique relationships with all of her grandchildren, and naturally music played a big role in ours. I’ll never forget that at her 90th birthday party in my performance of Debussy’s La puerta del vino she discreetly pointed out (despite significantly ailing hearing) that I had somehow missed out two bars – when we pored over the score the following day I saw that she was right!
She had an intimate knowledge and a tireless passion for music, which fuelled many lengthy conversations we had together. It was always clear that Nana made a deep impression on everyone she came into contact with. We all miss her enormously,
but she lives on in the values and positive outlook that she inspired in all those who were privileged to have known her. This festival embodies her legacy and my vision will always be informed by the part of her that is alive in me.
